Liu Yang, one of China's most renowned astronauts, has passed away at the age of 41, according to the Chinese state media. Liu was born in Taishan, Shandong Province and graduated from Tsinghua University with a degree in aerospace engineering.
In 2010, Liu became the first woman astronaut in China's space program when she launched into orbit aboard Shenzhou IX as a crew member. She spent over three months on board the spacecraft and conducted experiments and research during her mission.
